The occasion of NDEA caused a one-week hiatus of our publications, including the “week in pictures” we featured here… the following images have surfaced since October 13…

United Way’s Day of Caring

The annual United Way Day of Caring event, held October 13 in our area, saw students at some schools put their service caps on to help others in the community. Woodrow Wilson student Brittany Hannesson (above) works on a holiday card project for military personnel stationed overseas.  Another group of her classmates spent time with residents at Bethany Nursing Homes, and a third raked leaves in nearby neighborhoods.  Further north, the 5th grade class (below) of Washington Elementary teacher Rob Arneson set out for several hours to rake leaves in neighborhoods near the school.

DECA’s “Diamond-Caliber” Week

October 9-15 was DECA Week in North Dakota, which saw the state’s chapters converge on Fargo for a two-day conference.  Among its activities was a 5K “Move It” Walk to raise funding for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  Although the walk moved indoors to West Acres Mall, it was a success, raising over $3,000. On Saturday morning, Oct. 15, DECA students at North (above), South, and Davies (below) High Schools served up $5 pancake breakfasts at Fargo Applebee’s restaurants as part of a statewide fundraising event for participating local chapters.  The District’s three high schools raised over $7,400 during the two-hour event. Madison Elementary Junior Achievement “Career Day”

Madison Elementary students dressed up in their favorite future profession on October 13, during the annual “Career Day” event with Junior Achievement.  Junior Achievement volunteers from 28 different F-M area businesses and organizations presented lessons in the classrooms on financial literacy, job exploration, entrepreneurship, and other career-related topics.

Noteworthy Experience

Professional violinist Moni Simeonov visited North and South High School orchestra students on October 14. Simeonov (third from right, pictured here at North High), who was in town for that weekend’s Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra concert, spoke to the students about his profession, performed a selection of pieces for and with them, and gave the students simple suggestions on bettering their performance technique.
